What recruiters should really be looking for
Between project experience and soft skills – what really counts
In the IT industry, a CV is more than just a formal document. It is the first impression – and often the decisive one. Especially when international professionals apply for positions in Germany, a carefully crafted CV can make all the difference. But what do recruiters actually expect from an IT CV? What information is really relevant, and what can be safely omitted?
B3YOND-IT provides a practical overview of how IT specialists can optimally design their CVs – for a successful entry into the German job market.
Structure beats creativity
Above all, a professional CV must be clear and concise. Companies generally prefer the reverse chronological format – i.e. most recent positions first. Design gimmicks or cluttered layouts often distract from the essentials. Instead, clear sections, understandable wording and a logical structure are what count. Two pages are usually sufficient to present the most important stages of your career in a compact and convincing manner.
Demonstrate your expertise
Recruiters are not looking for buzzwords – they want to understand what applicants can really do. Therefore, you should not only list positions and employers, but also the technologies, frameworks and methods you have used. Concrete project examples are particularly important: What tasks did you perform? What results did you achieve? If you can name your own contributions to code quality, performance or security, you will leave a lasting impression.
Relevant certificates or further training – for example in the cloud environment, agile methods or IT security – should also be included.
International applications: transparency creates trust
Those applying from abroad should include some additional information in their CV. These include, in particular, language skills, ideally according to the Common European Framework of Reference (e.g. German B2, English C1), as well as information on your current residence or visa status. Soft skills such as teamwork, strong communication skills or cultural openness are also of particular interest in an international context – especially when backed up by specific examples.
